The Islamic Month of Muharram – Virtues and Merits of Ashura

The Islamic lunar calendar begins with the holy month of Muharram. Muharram is amongst the months which are classified under the term Ashhur-ul-Horom “sanctified months.” Allah has stated in the Glorious Qur’an “The number of months, according to Allah is twelve months (which is mentioned) in the book of Allah on the day in which We created the heavens and the earth. Amongst these twelve months, four are sanctified; that is the right religion. So do not wrong yourselves’ therein,” (9:3).

The four months according to authentic traditions are Muharram, Rajab, Zul Qadah, and Zul Hijjah. It has been reported that Rasulullah (saw), on the occasion of the last sermon (hajjat-ul-wada), addressed the Sahabah (ra) saying, “One year consists of twelve months, out of which four are sanctified. Three of them are in sequence: Zul Qadah, Zul Hijjah, Muharram, and the fourth is Rajab. (Bukhari)

The eminent commentator (mufassir) Ibn Katheer has written in his commentary (tafseer), “Allah has declared these four months sanctified and has increased their sanctity. He declared a sin therein more severe and has increased the virtue and reward of good deeds as well” (Ibn Katheer, Vol.2): The scholars of Islam have stated that the actions performed in these months have a great effect on the person as to what they will do, throughout the remainder of the year.

FASTING DURING THE MONTH OF MUHARRAM:

It has been reported by Ali (ra) that a man came to Rasulullah (saw) and asked, “0 Prophet of Allah! During which month should I fast after the month of Ramadan?” Rasulullah (saw) replied, “If you are to fast in any month other than the month of Ramadan, fast during the month of Muharram, because it is the month of Allah. There is a day in this month in which a whole nation was forgiven and wherein Allah will forgive another nation,” (Tirmidhi H. 683).

THE ORIGIN OF THE FAST OF A’ASHURA: (10th MUHARRAM).

The word A’ashura is derived from the Arabic word which means ten in the English language. It has been named A’ashura because it is observed on the 10th of Muhharram. According to numerous authentic traditions, fasting on the day of A’ashura was initially obligatory upon the Muslims. However, it was made optional when Allah commanded the Muslims to fast throughout the month of Ramadan.

It has been reported by A’isha (ra) that when the Rasulullah (saw) came to Madinah, he fasted on the day of A’ashura and directed the people to fast on that day as well. However, when the fast of Ramadan was made obligatory, the obligation of fasting was confined to Ramadan, and the fast of A’ashura was made optional (Abu Dawood).

Nevertheless, Ibn Abbas (ra) relates, when the Prophet of Allah (saw) was informed that the Jews fast on the 10th of Muharram, Rasulullah (saw) asked them, “Why do you fast on this day?” They said, “This is the day when Sayyidna Musa (as) and his followers miraculously crossed the Sea, while Pharaoh was drowned in its water.” Upon hearing this Rasulullah (S.A.W) stated, “We are more closer to Musa than you.” He then directed the Muslims to fast on the day of A’ashura(Abu Dawood).

In addition to fasting on the 10th of Muharram, we should also fast on either the 9th or the llth. As Rasulullah (S.A.W) was informed that the Jews also fast on the 10th of Muharram, he said, “If I will be alive next year, I will also fast on the 9th of this month” (Muslim H. 1917).

VIRTUES OF FASTING ON THE 10th OF MUHURRAM:

Abdullah ibn Mas’ud (ra) relates that Rasulullah (saw) preferred the fast of A’ashura to the fast of other days and preferred the fast of Ramadan to the fast of A’ashura (Bukhari, Muslim).

Abu Qatadah (R.A) relates that Rasulullah (saw) said, “The fasting of the tenth of Muharram grants the forgiveness of one whole year,” (Tirmidhi H.683).

BEING GENEROUS TO ONES FAMILY ON THE DAY OF A’ASHURA:

Abdullah Ibn Mas’ud relates that Rasulullah (saw) stated, “Whosoever is generous to one’s family on the day of A’ashura, Allah will be generous (provide barakah) towards that person throughout the entire year,”(Razeen).

According to these types of traditions, one should be more generous to his/her family by providing more for them on the day of A’ashura as compared to other days. Although these traditions (above-mentioned tradition) are not very authentic according to the scholars of hadith, many other eminent scholars like Imams Ibn Hibban and Bahiqi have accepted them as reliable.

9 things you should know about the 9th of Dhul Hijjah:

1. It is called the day of Arafah. (Muslim)
2. Fasting this day expiates the sins of the past and coming year. (Muslim)
3. The Prophet peace be upon him said, “Hajj is Arafah” (Ahmad) i.e. Hajj is invalid if one does not go to Arafah during the prescribed timing.
4. The monumental Prophetic Last Sermon was delivered on this day.
5. Supplication on this day is considered the most virtuous. (Malik; Al-Muwatta)
6. The most meritorious remembrance this day is: {there is no God except Allah.He is One and He has no partner; sovereignty and praise belong to him, and He is powerful over everything}. (Tirmidhi) لا إله إلا الله وحده لا شريك له ، له الملك ، وله الحمد ، وهو على كل شيء قدير
7. With the exception of the battle of Badr, Satan is the most disgraced and humiliated on this day. (Al-Muwatta)
8. There is no other day on which people are emancipated from the Fire more than this day. (Mustadrak)
9. Allah takes an oath of this day in Surah Al-Fajr; Chapter 89

The color most pleasing to Prophet Muhammad (Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him) was green, while some said it was white.  With respect to clothing, the Prophet (peace be upon him) encouraged men to wear white in numerous hadiths.  Thus, according to the sunnah, it is preferred to wear white, as well as black and green. [Ibn Abidin, Radd al-Muhtar]

While wearing a green turban is not a specific sunnah, wearing green garments in general is from the sunnah, so one could wear a green turban to fulfill that.

It is important to note that the Prophet (Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him) himself wore different types of clothing from different places, and of different colors and designs, not just one style or color, though there would be nothing wrong if one chose to did this.

On Green Being the Favorite Color

Anas in Malik (Allah be pleased with him) is reported to have said,

“The most beloved of colors to the Messenger of Allah (Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him) was green.” [Tabarani, Mu’jam al-Awsat; al-Bazzar, Musnad]

Although this hadith by itself is weak in its chain, it is strengthened by a corroborating narration in which Anas and a group of people went out to a plot of land covered in vegetation, and so someone exclaimed, “How beautiful is this greenery!”  Thereafter, Anas reminisced that, “We used to say that the Prophet’s (Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him) favorite color was green.” [al-Bayhaqi, Shu’ab al-Iman]

The main reason that scholars cite for this preference is that green will be the main color of the clothing of the people in Paradise [Qur’an 18:31].  It is also reported that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon) used to like to gaze at the beauty of natural greenery.

The Virtue of White Clothing

The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: “Wear white from amongst your clothes, for indeed they are amongst the best clothes you have, and shroud your dead in them (also).” [Abu Dawud, Ibn Majah and Tirmidhi with variation in wording]

This does not make it an obligation, but it is a strong encouragement and a sunnah.  It is the most preferred color to wear for men [Sayyid Ali Zada, Sharh Shir’atul Islam].

Based on this hadith, some scholars such as Ibn al-Qayyim inferred that the Prophet’s favorite color was white, peace and blessings be upon him [Ibn al-Qayyim, Zad al-Ma’ad].

The Green Turban: Is it Specifically a Sunnah?

The green turban itself is not a specific sunnah, in that we have no report that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) wore it.  However, generally wearing green clothes is a sunnah.  [Ibn Abideen, Radd al-Muhtar; Shaykhi-Zada, Majma’ al-Anhur]

It is reported in the Musannaf of Ibn Abi Shayba however, that some Companions were seen wearing turbans of various colors, one of them being green.

Al-Kattani quotes Imam al-Suyuti as saying, “This green turban is not [prescribed] from the Sacred Law itself, nor from the Sunnah, and was not around [as a specific dress] in the early period [of Islam].  It was only begun [as a distinct practice] in the year 763 hijri by the order of [Sultan] al-Ashraf Sha’ban ibn Hasan [to those of the Prophetic Household, so that it might distinguish them from others out of respect].”

He then quotes al-Khadimi from al-Tariqa al-Muhammadiya, saying “This sign is a permissible innovation; the one who is not a Sharif [ie. Sayyid, from Ahl al Bayt] should not be prevented from wearing it, and a Sharif who leaves it should not be ordered to wear it…” [al-Kattani, al-Di’amah fi Ahkam Sunna al-‘Imama]

This returns back to the custom of one’s land.  Today, one’s choosing a green turban can be based on the virtues of wearing the color green as a sunnah, or seeking to emulate those of prophetic lineage or spiritual learning who wear it in our times.  And Allah knows best.
