Even though he loved his son more than anything in the world, Prophet Ibrahim knew he must obey the command of Allāh—and his righteous son agreed. So the father and son resolved to carry out Allāh’s will. But, Allāh, the Most-Merciful, seeing their willingness, replaced Ismail with a ram, which was sacrificed instead.

But what is Udhiyah/Qurbani all about? Well, the word Qurbani is an Urdu and Farsi word derived from the Arabic Qurban, which means an act performed to seek Allāh’s pleasure. It and Udhiyah are used in reference to the sacrifice of an an’aam animal (camel, cattle, sheep, goat), made in the name of Allāh, to serve as charity. And in commemoration of Prophet Ibrahim’s story, Muslims sacrifice an animal at the end of Hajj season, on ‘Īd al-Aḍḥa, and share the meat with the needy.

From Abu Sa’eed al-Khudri, who said: “Whoever reads Surah al-Kahf on the night of Jumu’ah, will have a light that will stretch between him and the Ancient House (the Ka’bah).”(Narrated by al-Daarimi, 3407. This hadeeth was classed as saheeh by Shaykh al-Albaani in Saheeh al-Jaami, 6471)

“Whoever reads Surah al-Kahf on the day of Jumu’ah, will have a light that will shine from him from one Friday to the next.”
(Narrated by al-Haakim, 2/399; al-Bayhaqi, 3/249. Ibn Hajar said in Takhreej al-Adhkaar that this is a hasan hadeeth, and he said, this is the strongest report that has been narrated concerning reading Surah al-Kahf. See: Fayd al-Qadeer, 6/198. It was classed as saheeh by Shaykh al-Albaani in Saheeh al-Jaami’, 6470)

It was narrated that Ibn ‘Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said: “The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: ‘Whoever reads Surah al-Kahf on the day of Jumu’ah, a light will shine for him from beneath his feet to the clouds of the sky, which will shine for him on the Day of Resurrection, and he will be forgiven (his sins) between the two Fridays.'”

Al-Mundhiri said, this was narrated by Abu Bakr ibn Mardawayh in his Tafseer, with an isnaad with which there was nothing wrong.

The surah may be read during the night or the day of Jumu’ah. The night of Jumu’ah starts from sunset on Thursday, and the day of Jumu’ah ends at sunset. Therefore the time for reading this surah extends from sunset on Thursday to sunset on Friday.

Al-Mannaawi said:
Al-Haafiz ibn Hajar said in his Amaali: “In some reports it says ‘the day of Jumu’ah’ and in some reports it says ‘the night of Jumu’ah’. They may be reconciled by saying that what is meant is the day which includes the night and vice versa.” (Fayd al-Qadeer, 6/199)

Canada’s cultural and religious diversity has, without question, shaped the selection of fresh and prepared foods available today at both retail and foodservice. Religious dietary food laws are present in most major religions. These laws date back millennia and not only dictate what foods may be consumed, but also how such foods may be prepared and even cultivated. The reasons why religious food laws are so diverse are exceptionally fascinating and are the subject of much scholarly debate. Religious food law and modern food law do, however, have points where their relationship intersects.

One of the most intricate sets of religious dietary laws is the kashruth. This defines what foods are kosher, a term that is literally translated as what is fit or proper for consumption. In 1911, Crisco was among the earliest foods in North America to be widely marketed as kosher. In the early 1920s rabbinical authorities in the U.S. and Canada began efforts to bring more oversight to kosher labelling and advertising. Nevertheless this remained largely unregulated and was the cause of much frustration by Canadian consumers.

In the 1950s further strides were made to bring greater supervision and certification for kosher foods. By the 1960s kosher foods were starting to build a reputation for quality, and began to gain popularity with mainstream consumers who were purchasing them for non-religious reasons. In 1973 amendments to the Canadian Food and Drug Regulations (FDR) were made that introduced the explicit requirement that foods labelled or advertised as kosher must meet all kashruth requirements applicable to that particular food. Notwithstanding a very minor technical amendment made in 1984, the FDR has not changed since.

Beyond requiring foods represented as kosher to meet the kashruth, the FDR does not actually provide any specific standards. Canadian consumers would not expect government to define religious dietary practices, nor would governments wish to interfere in this regard. Canadian consumers would, however, expect foods so marked to be clear and truthful, a matter that is generally governed by the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA). Here, then, Old World religious dietary food law overlaps with modern food law.

In June 2013, amendments to the FDR were proposed to add clarity in the case of foods represented by the term halal or any other markings that would otherwise indicate that the food is halal. Governed by Islamic law, halal defines foods that are “permissible” for consumption by Muslims. It is similar but not identical to kosher.

Canada’s expanding diversity has seen the demand for halal foods grow rapidly over the last two decades. The market in Canada for halal foods is currently estimated to be $1 billion annually, and is growing. There are also varying interpretations of Islamic law on what constitutes halal, creating frustrations among consumers and causing Old and New World food laws to again intersect.

The University of Regina is going to great lengths to help its Muslim students avoid doing the same when washing for on-campus prayer sessions.

The university has installed “foot-baths” in a public washroom at its Riddell Centre, in order to allow Muslim students — many of whom pray numerous times a day, and wash themselves beforehand — to clean their feet in a way that isn’t awkward and difficult through a use of regular sinks.

“I’ve seen them do it. It’s tough for them,” Nathan Sgrazzutti, president of the U of R Students Union, said on Tuesday of the troubles that many of the more than 700 practising Muslims at the campus had experienced when preparing for prayers.

“We’re showing our ability to cater to their needs.”

Two foot-baths, resembling large sinks with seats, are in a men’s washroom following their installation earlier this summer at what university spokesman Dale Johnson said was a total cost of about $35,000.

“I haven’t been in the women’s washroom, but I’m under the understanding it’s in both,” Sgrazzutti said, lauding the U of R’s administration for its efforts to assist Muslim students from Regina and those who have come to the campus from other countries.

“There was a bit of a push from our Muslim students society as well as the students union, and the university was very receptive.”

An “official opening” for the foot-baths, said Johnson, will be held by Muslim students on Oct. 2.

“It’s a really neat addition,” Sgrazzutti said of the new bathroom facilities, which some refer to as “foot-sinks.”

“They’re very new. I still have people asking me what they are.”

FACT #1

Even if we wanted to, we couldn’t count the blessings of Allah. An obvious blessing is the day of Jumu’ah (congregational prayer for Muslims). Friday is called Jummah. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: “The best day the sun rises over is Friday. On it Allah created Adam. On it he was made to enter paradise, on it he was expelled from it, and the Last Hour will take place on no other day than Friday.”

“It was named Jumu’ah because it is derived from the word Al-Jam’ in Arabic which means to gather, as Muslims gather on this day every week, and Allah has commanded the believers to gather for His worship, as He says that which means: “Oh you who believe! When the call is proclaimed for Jumu`ah (Friday prayer), come fast to the remembrance of Allah.”

FACT #3

The congregational prayer (Jumu’ah prayer) is one of the obligatory acts in Islam and one of the great gatherings of Muslims. The angels sit in wait for the arrival of people.

Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) said: “On the day of Jummah, the angels stand at the entrance of that masjid in which Jumuah salat is to be offered. They write down the name of the person who enters the masjid first, and thereafter the name of the person who follows, and they continue doing this. The person who entered first will receive the reward of sacrificing a camel in the path of Allah; the one who followed him will get the reward of sacrificing a cow, thereafter a chicken, thereafter the reward of giving an egg as charity in the path of Allah.Once the khutbah commences, the angels close the register and begin listening to the khutbah.”

FACT #4

The day of Jumu’ah includes an hour during which all supplications are accepted. Abu Hurayrah, narrated that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), said: “On (the day of) Jumu’ah is an hour during which Allah gives to a Muslim servant standing in prayer whatever he asks for.”

FACT #5

Giving your charity on Jummah carries more virtue than other days. Ka’b, narrated that Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) said, “Charity given during the day of Jumu’ah is greater (in reward) than any other day.”

Believers in Allah will see Allah on Jummah.

It is an Eid for muslims. This holiday happens regularly and frequently. Ibn Abbas, narrated that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said, “Jumu’ah is a day of celebration, so whoever attends it should perform ghusl beforehand.”

FACT #8

It is a day on which sins are forgiven.
Salman narrated Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) said, “Any man who performs ghusl on Friday, perfumes himself if he has perfume, wears the best of his clothes, then goes to the mosque and offers as many prayers as he wishes while not harming anybody, then listens quietly while the Imam speaks until he offers the prayer, will have all his sins between that Friday and the next forgiven.”

FACT #9

When walking to attend the Friday sermon, a Muslim gets the reward of both praying qiyam (the night prayer) and fasting a full year. Aws ibn Aws narrated Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) said, “Whoever performs ghusl on Friday after having sexual intercourse with his wife, then goes early to the mosque and attends from the beginning of the khutbah and draws near to the Imam and listens to him attentively, Allah will give him the full reward of fasting all the days of a year and observing night-vigil on each of its nights for every step that he took towards the mosque.”

FACT #10

Dying on Friday, during the day or night, is a sign of a good end. Allah The Almighty will enable the person to be steadfast during it. Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) said, “Any Muslim who dies during the day or night of Friday will be protected by Allah from the trial of the grave.” [At Tirmidhi and Ahmad]

The political discourse in Canada over the past few weeks has been dominated by Quebec government’s proposal for a secular ‘Charter of Values’, put forth by the ruling Parti Quebecois (PQ). The most controversial aspect of the proposal is the ban on civil servants wearing religious clothing to ensure ‘religious neutrality’ of the state. The debate reached its climax this past Tuesday with the unveiling of appalling pictograms outlining how public employees can dress.

The proposed legislation is supposed to ban public employees from wearing headscarves, face veils, turbans, skullcaps and large crosses (small ones are okay). Whether it is a doctor at a hospital wearing a turban, or a hijab donning worker at a daycare – they will have to decide between work and religion. This militant and deviant expression of secularism fell short of just banning beards- it’s hypocritical, racist and self-contradictory.

The PQ claims it is doing so to maintain ‘religious neutrality’. If that is the case then it should perhaps start by banning the provinces’ most overt religious symbol: its flag.

Also known as the Fleurdelisé, Quebec’s flag, with its four fleurs-de-lis and a cross, is a beautiful expression of Christian symbolism. Historically associated with French Roman Catholic monarchs, the white fleur-de-lis symbolizes religious purity and chastity. The three petals are widely considered to represent the Holy Trinity; the band on the bottom represents Mary. Images of the Virgin Mary carrying the flower in her right hand are standard portrayals in Christian art.

Hypocrisy of the proposed legislation becomes evident when the more obvious issues that theoretically impact ‘religious neutrality’ are left unquestioned. Examples of this include the gigantic cross in the National Assembly, taking an oath on the Bible or Christmas trees. Will the government stop funding Catholic schools to attain this neutrality? What about funding for chaplaincy services? It appears Ms. Marios’ government is unable to distinguish between the concepts of a secular state and the inevitable interaction of that state between itself and religious agencies.

But the Quebec government is obviously not that uneducated. And that’s where the racist element comes in. Banning civil servants from wearing religious symbols doesn’t amend any supposed shortcomings of Quebec’s secularism. One can hold strong religious views without displaying it on their sleeves. In fact, there have been instance of justices refusing to marry same sex couples because they were opposed to gay marriage – they weren’t wearing a niqab when they did so. Claiming to champion secularism is simply PQ’s way to brazenly discriminate against minority groups with hopes of gathering support through identity politics.

Furthermore, this proposed legislation is self-contradictory. It effectively creates two classes of citizens; one which is noble enough to become civil servants and the other one is deprived of this privilege. The province is thus not ‘neutral’ by any standards – it’s openly saying that religious people ‘need not apply’. Even voicing such outrageous views, let alone implementing them, creates an unhealthy segregated society. If religious minorities can’t participate in public life, how could they ever hope to blossom into our social fabric? What is even scarier is that the PQ is pushing this charter on the private sector as well – this is the textbook definition of systematic discrimination.

Parti Quebecois is well aware that their proposals are so blatantly unconstitutional that they will be shot down by the courts. But that doesn’t matter as the objective of this political exercise has already been achieved; even if it meant having to stoop to an all time low. The old game of identity politics has allowed the party to stir up enough support from its small nationalist constituency to survive the next election.

One of the ironic aspects of this repulsive ‘Charter of Quebec Values’ is that it has indirectly helped exemplify values that most Canadians share. Editorials of all major newspapers are filled with condemnations of the charter. Politicians from all facets have openly opposed it. From leader of the opposition, Thomas Mulcair, to Liberal Leader Justin Trudeau – even the notorious Minister Jason Kenney, released a picture of him wearing sikh headwear. The political leadership of Montreal, Quebec’s biggest city and economic hub, unanimously denounced the charter and thousands rallied against it. Even within the PQ there were dissenters; MP Maria Mourani was expelled from caucus for her opposition to this edict. In a rather innovative spirit to lure doctors, Ontario’s Lakeridge Hospital released a recruitment poster with a hijab wearing woman stating, “We don’t care what’s on your head; we care what’s in it.”

Despite the lunacy of this entire episode, it’s important to resist the temptation to stereotype Quebeckers as intolerant and narrow-minded. During my short time there, I found the Quebecois to be a warm-hearted and friendly people. Whether it was the affectionate ‘Bon Appétit’ from the lunch lady at Université Laval, the student protesters who gave me their iconic red square to wear, or my gracious French teacher who put up with my non-existent language skills; I have nothing but good memories. Let’s hope this debacle is forgotten as a cheap political gimmick which has unfortunately brought unprecedented shame to Quebec and the rest of Canada.

After Fajr & Maghrib Prayer:

Muslim Taimi (R.A.) narrates from Prophet Mohammad (S.A.W.) to recite the following seven times before speaking to anyone:

اللَّهُمَّ أَجِرْنِي مِنَ النَّارِ

“O Allah, save me from the fire (Jahannam).”

If a person recites the above dua and dies the same night, he will be saved from Jahannam and if he recites it seven times after Fajr Salaat before speaking to anyone and if he dies on that same day, he will be saved from Jahannam.

In another hadith Prophet Mohammad (S.A.W.) stated that if a person recites the following dua 10 times while sitting in the Tashahudd position, then for each time ten rewards are written for him and ten sins are removed from the Name-Amal and he will be saved from every evil thing and the accursed Satan and no other sin besides shirk will be able to destroy him. In relation to actions, he will be superior to all other people. If anyone recites more than the above, he will go further and that is a different matter.

لَا إِلَهَ إِلَّا اللَّهُ وَحْدَهُ لَا شَرِيكَ لَهُ لَهُ الْمُلْكُ وَلَهُ الْحَمْدُ بِيَدِهِ الْخَيْرُ يُحْيِي وَيُمِيتُ وَهُوَ عَلَى كُلِّ شَيْءٍ قَدِيرٍ

“Besides Allah there is no other worthy of worship. He is Alone and has no partner. His is the Kingdom and to Him is all praise, in His hands is good, He gives and takes life (gives death) and He has power overall things”.
